چکیده

Sucrose concentration of sugarbeets (Beta vulgaris L.) grown in the U.S. varies over a wide range of 10 to 20 percent. Within a climatic zone such as tration varies over a narrower 20 percent. This variation in southern Idaho, sucrose concenbut still wide range of 14 to sucrose concentration is due to many factors that include variety (19, 24, 26), nitrogen (N) level (18, 23), growth patterns of the crop (3, 16, 25, 29), climatic conditions (1, 22, 28), and other factors that are not fully understood. Refined sucrose production is based on the product of root yield and extractable sucrose concentration. Therefore, it is of prime importance to have practices and conditions that provide adequate root growth while maintaining sufficiently high sucrose percentages and purity for profitable sucrose extraction and yield.

REPRINTED FROM JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SUGAR BEET TECHNOLOGISTS Effect of Irrigation Method and Late Season Nitrate-Nitrogen Concentration on Sucrose Production by Sugarbeets'

For maximum sucrose production by sugarbeets (Beta vulgaris L.) in southern Idaho, the available soil nitrogen (N) level should be highest during early July, when the plant N uptake (N u p) rate is highest, and lowest by the latter part of August ( 1, 12r. Inadequate N during the early growth stages limits root and sucrose yield, whereas excess N stimulates top growth, increases root impurities...

REPRINTED FROM JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SUGAR BEET TECHNOLOGISTS Effect of Row Spacing and Nitrogen Rate on Root and Sucrose Yield of Sugarbeets in Southern Idaho1

Research results at other locations in western U.S. indicate that a plant spacing of approximately 12 inches within rows and 20 or 22 inches between rows is necessary to obtain near maximum yields of sugarbeets (Beta vulgaris 1..) and yet maintain adequate space for machinery operation (4, 6, 10). 3 Increasing row and plant spacings with corresponding decreases in plant population have reduced ...

Predicting Nitrogen Fertilizer Needs for Sugarbeets from Residual Nitrate and Mineralizable Nitrogen'

Received for publication ply 8, 1974 Nitrogen (N) fertilizer management for sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) production requires more precise information than for most crops. Inadequate N limits plant growth and root yield, but excess N may reduce both sucrose percentage and recoverable sucrose (7)." Also, excess N may stimulate more leaf growth than necessary. The rate and timing of N fertilizer a...

Interpreting the Rate of Change in Nitrate-Nitrogen in Sugarbeet Petioles'

Nitrate-nitrogen in sugarbeet petioles is used to evaluate current N status of sugarbeet crops. Since the NO,-N changes rapidly during the season, better relationships are needed to interpret these data relative to sugarbeet N nutrition. Sugarbeets (Beta vulgaris, L.) were grown at four N fertilization rates and two irrigation levels to determine the root yield, sucrose percentage, sucrose yiel...

4III1 I Li, ULU EFFECT OF IRRIGATION METHOD AND LEACHING OF 1 NITRATE-NITROGEN ON SUCROSE PRODUCTION BY SUGARBEETS

For maximum sucrose production in southcentral Idaho, the available N level in the soil should be highest during July, when the plant N uptake rate is highest, and should be nearly depleted by about August 20. The desired available N supply in silt loam soil depends on proper N application and removal of excess N from the root zone late in the season. If the available N level in the soil can be...
